사회적 거짓말이 대인관계에 끼치는 영향 사회적 관계는 사람들이 사랑받기 좋아하고 칭찬받기 좋아하기 때문에 서로에게 때때로 칭찬을 해 주는 것으로부터 이로움을 얻는다. 그러한 측면에서, 속이는 말이지만 기분 좋게 만드는 말과 같은 사회적 거짓말(“너 머리 자른 게 마음에 든다.”)은 상호 관계에 도움이 될 수 있다. 사회적 거짓말은 심리적 이유 때문에 하며 자신의 이익과 타인의 이익 모두에 부합한다. 거짓말을 한 사람들은 자신의 거짓말이 다른 사람들을 즐겁게 한다는 것을 인식할 때 만족감을 느끼거나, 그런 거짓말을 함으로써 어색한 상황이나 토론을 피한다는 것을 깨닫기 때문에 사회적 거짓말은 자신의 이익에 부합한다. 항상 진실을 듣는 것(“너 지금 몇 년 전보다 훨씬 더 나이 들어 보인다.”)이 사람의 자신감과 자존감을 해칠 수 있기 때문에 사회적 거짓말은 타인의 이익에 부합한다.
